Project summary
Rapid Tier 1 salvage of a capsized barge and 60-tonne crane in Tauranga Harbour, including containment, underwater separation, debris recovery, and full environmental protection.
Overview
Bay Marine Works responded immediately to the capsizing of a large aluminium sectional barge and a 60-tonne piling crane in Tauranga Harbour. Within an hour, our crew was on site to assist with securing the area, removing smaller vessels, and preventing environmental contamination with our oil spill containment booms.
Scope of Work
- Immediate response to a major maritime incident within Tauranga Harbour
- Deployment of oil booms and containment systems to prevent fuel or hydraulic oil release
- Continuous environmental monitoring during all salvage stages
- Underwater separation of barge and crane using Broco cutting systems
- Recovery of barge sections, equipment, and debris to restore site safety
- Systematic disassembly and staged salvage of 60-tonne crane components, including counterweights and boom sections
- Coordination with local crane barge and land-based equipment for final recovery
Outcome
The operation was completed safely, without environmental impact or safety incidents. Bay Marine Works demonstrated its capability for large-scale marine salvage, Tier 1 oil spill response, and precision underwater recovery under challenging conditions.
